There is a difference between having a religion and having a religious faith, with the latter pointing more to a personal relationship with a God, and notably the God that says that he is the only God as is written in the Bible. Most British people who are true brits get baptised at birth into that religion, and they grow up as Church of England (C of E). But they may not be religious. And many learn about Jesus in Sunday Schools, and then put their trust in him thus becoming born-again Christians. So while many are C of E, some are truly Christian. I imagine it is the same in any country that one is in.
