Mr. Goodman was perfect for this role because a rarity among actors he has the ability to be warm, ingratiating and sympathetic one moment, and seriously, even frighteningly evil the next. This is an exceptional quality for an actor to have. Many are good guys while others are typecast as bad guys, but not too many can be warm and cuddly one moment and eerily menacing the very next. Mr. Goodman possess that rare quality that makes for great cinema. He does it all: comedy, mystery, horror and straight drama. And he does them equally well. Even one of his earliest roles, a TV show in which he only appeared briefly as a radio operator on a ship is memorable. And I think his role in "O Brother, where art thou" was a perfect example. He began as a friendly, helpful gent and without a moment's notice or change in appearance, he showed himself as a ruthless hard-hitting bandido, one to avoid like the black plague.

You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.

John Goodman is a national treasure, as far as I'm concerned. Every time I watch a movie with him in it, he's the best thing about that movie.

Exactly right, when he got mad in Roseanne he was so convincing I would always be worried he was going to haul off and beat the hell out of her or whoever he was mad at, had the same vibe as Tony Soprano, whenever someone mouthed off to either of them you'd be thinking "oh man you're about to get it now"

I think that another incredibly strong aspect of his performance is that it captures the way that people are capable of doing horrible things while still thinking of themselves as good people. To his mind, Howard probably is just a
protector
and someone who wants to be a good dad/caretaker.
He probably doesn't think it was his fault/wrong that he killed Brittany, or that he killed Emmett. I think it's a great performance because Howard is so convinced that he is being reasonable that he even manages to convince Michelle (and the audience) at times.
Sometimes the scariest bad guys are the ones who think they're the good guys.

Goodman is one of my favorite actors. His roles in Barton Fink, The Big Lebowski, and now 10 Cloverfield Lane are all top-notch, memorable performances. He really can do it all, but I must confess, I prefer seeing him in these roles where he plays the unstable character, because he really does own the role.

Goodman stole the entire movie. IMO it's second to the only reason it was good (the plot, at least the first hour+ being first). The ending ruined a 10/10 for me.

I agree that John Goodman is an excellent actor. I liked this movie to a certain extent, mostly because of Goodman's acting. My favourite scene is when Howard decides to play some music from the jukebox. He's creepy one moment, then he's a riot dancing the next. Or after
he's just shot Emmett
, he brings Michelle some ice cream.
I remembered him from Roseanne as being cuddly and likable, but then I watched Damages (season 4) and he was quite different. He gave a brilliant performance as a religious devoted family man who is involved in shady military activities.
And all the pieces matter (The Wire)
