I didn't notice this in the message boards yet or maybe I missed it, but during the talk about Aeolus (father of Sisyphus) who was punished by death with:
"would forever roll a massive boulder to the top of a steep hill. But his efforts were always in vain, for whenever Sisyphus neared the top, the rock would roll right back down again. Sisyphus was thus forced to start his labor all over again."
And that punishment was because he "made a promise to death that he didn't keep"
Well was I the only one that noticed the ending part where the taxi driver appears right at the moment of her sons death (things go dark), and he states her son will not be coming back clearly thats a hint that he knows something about death, and then she requests to go to the harbour, and 'promised' him she'd come back soooo he's Death and she broke a promise she made to him? so is made to endure an eternal struggle to accomplish nothing? thats my interpretation using the Aeolus/Sisyphus myth.
I also don't believe she was alive at all, and as hinted through the movie, this IS all just in her mind, as a kind of purgatory, probably through guilt knowing she was a terrible mother, and so guilt ridden that she dreamed up ways (also hinted at the very beginning that its all a bad dream) to go back and fix it and be a good mother in endless scenarios, and death gave her/punished her with that? I dunno, it's a mind bender lol but thats my thoughts.
