This was what the aliens were doing on Earth, as explained by Emma Stone's character.
They were the Creators of Humanity
The movie reveals that the Andromedans arrived on Earth millions of years ago. They accidentally caused the mass extinction of the dinosaurs and, out of a sense of guilt, decided to seed the planet with life. They created humans in their own image, hoping to cultivate a peaceful and advanced civilization (the myth of Atlantis is cited as one of their early successful periods).
They were trying to "Fix" Human Aggression
As humans evolved, they became increasingly violent and aggressive—something the aliens viewed as a "genetic corruption" of their original design. To fix this, the Andromedan leader (the Empress) came to Earth masquerading as Michelle Fuller (Emma Stone), the CEO of the pharmaceutical giant Auxolith.
The "drug trials" and medical experiments Teddy was obsessed with weren't just for corporate profit; the aliens were actually trying to develop a medicine that could chemically suppress human aggression and return humanity to a state of peace.
