In the Daryl series they're showing how it originated in France from some science lab experiments.

True, the show is yet to explain exactly what the infection is and how it started, unless they have in the spinoffs that i do not really watch.
The comics never bothered to explain it because that is kinda realistic i guess, a bunch of ordinary people not connected to the government or any scientists probably will never know how and why it all started.

Not sure, but I wonder if those rare isolated amazonian tribes who have never had any contact with the civilized world are uninfected. That might be something interesting to explore.

It doesn't matter where they go. It's the dame show no matter where it is set. It's time to kill the franchise.
