Interesting question. I'm currently watching this and it occurs to me that he didn't really stand a chance given his troubled family. I guess his father's taxidermy hobby helped grow his fetish for viscera and he was clearly lonely and at odds with his sexuality. I think obviously not getting caught earlier encouraged him to be bold and to continue.
I don't know but it's hard to watch it without seeing him with a somewhat sympathetic eye.

That is a scary thought, if something as extreme as say Dahmer's nature can't be controlled.
