Oh no, no, no no and NO! Nothing like Twilight. I don't hate Twilight, but it simply can't compare to Hunger Games. The stories are wildly different and HG is far superior. The only similarity is that they are both young adult films. If you haven't watched it yet, please do so. If you did and didn't like it, please consider Catching Fire. I personally think it's the best of the four.

Yes, but it's sort of a backwards way of regarding it. Divergent came later and was TRYING to resemble Hunger Games.

I consider Divergent to be the closest comparable (even more so than that Japanese film which I also won't mention by name). That being said, The Hunger Games is pretty unique. That may be part of the reason I like it so much.

You have the futuristic dictatorship that will do anything to stay in power, plus the theme of knowing that you're always being watched by government spies.

In my first post I was using original in the sense of not a copy. But now that you
mention it I have to take issue with your broad claim:

As you undoubtedly know it is common in this genre for many authors to treat vaguely
similar situations and themes. There are no arguments about originality. Each work
is an original creation of the author. The originality comes from the author's
treatment of the subject. Suzanne Collins' novel "The Hunger Games" undoubtedly
shares some elements with other works, but is still an original work.
With regard to the film I would quote Roger Ebert: "It's not what a movie is about,
it's how it is about it." You have a team of filmmakers adding other original
touches. So I would say there is considerable originality in the novel and film
of "The Hunger Games". And that is multiplied when you consider the series.

Sorry this movie is not that original. There are numerous books and movies that had very similar and/or plots and themes.

I'm 67 years old so I've seen plenty of dystopian films pre-2000. By logical conclusions
I mean the situations in the film could be the result of the continuation of current
trends-concentration of wealth, global warming etc. Like all good science fiction the
situations are exaggerated as a comment on current situations.

I am guessing you have not seen any dystopian movies pre-2000? Not sure what you mean by logical conclusions either.

No, it's nothing like Twilight. Nor is it like the superhero films that, judging by
your posting history, you favor. The gladiator premise is similar to a lot of previous
works. And despite the superficial similarities to a certain Japanese film which shall
remain nameless, it's an original work. It's a realistic dystopian look at what the US
could look like if certain current trends were taken to their logical conclusions.
