Roadies are essentially the support staff for a musician/band. They are responsible for setting up and maintaining the instruments, lighting and sound equipment, etc. They are supported by a "local crew," which are basically roadies but they do not travel with the band, but are rather at each stop of a particular tour.
Roadies are basically the backbone of any touring act.
