According to Lacan, desire is always lack. Desire pushes for recognition. It is less a question of what we desire as much as it is that we be recognised. Poor Mashturd wishes to be recognized. But he is a slave, while I am a Master (Hegel), so I cannot recognize him. He must labour on himself (he must stop fingering his anal cavity, wash his fingers, and get a proper job).
