I might be wrong, and have nothing but a hunch to base this on, but I suspect left wing types aren't bought into the "truth" of mythology. They might know the stories, but they wouldn't recognize the wisdom in them. They don't seem to be able to accept the reality of human nature. They seem to think the root cause of every problem and issue is socially constructed, not us as a species.
The type of man that thinks the military is not needed could never understand the truth of the Iliad.
