I like the Canadian option. There's too much hate speech floating about in the States.

On the matter of free speech it's interesting to compare a country like the U.S. to a country like Canada. They are both free countries and representative democracies.
But in Canada "hate speech" which denigrates anyone based on race, sex or sexual orientation is illegal. While that same "hate speech" is protected by our Bill of Rights in the U.S.

Yes, American attitudes to free speech are quite charming. I hear that in Germany you can be fined for facetiously giving a Nazi salute in public or uploading Mein Kampf (unexpurgated).

In most countries you'll get in trouble for speech that threatens harm, incites violence, or harasses.
Having said that, I find the American dedication to free speech admirable. Everyone wants to keep speech as free as possible, just apppreciating that there always will be some guardrails.

Again, agreed. After all, we all take our cue from Socrates, and he was the ultimate "free speech" advocate.

I agree. I'm most impressed for arguments about what you cannot say, actually. Free speech is a myth: it has never existed, and it cannot exist.

Even in your country, where free speech is most free, you'll have some issues if you (without reason) shout 'fire!' in a crowded movie theater, or if you incite people to commit genocide. There are limits to free speech, not many but a few.
