Nose breaks are common, but not to that type of extreme like mine.
To me, a career ending injury will be either a knee or a back/neck injury. Something I will never recover from, so I won't be able to play as well as I am today.
The reason I think others were surprised, was because of the severity of the break. They saw a guy with the front face of his skull….broken. I didn't see it. I think the fact that I couldn't see how bad it looked, was the reason it didn't mentally effect me and scared me to continue playing.
We did lose 3 players on our team though. They saw the injury, never came back.

He said his nose and then said skull and then went out right after surgery to play and then said he played 2 weeks after surgery. He's not consistent with his story.

How could a broken nose be a career ending injury?
