<p dir="auto">They could've held him prisoner for as long as they wanted to. Or at least until they were paid, but even that wouldn't guarantee a happy ending for Captain Phillips though.<br />

<p dir="auto">Its been a while since I've seen this film so I can't quite remember the circumstances around what you're asking about, but in all cases these people are about the money, not the killing, and ransom is their chief demand.  If they start killing their hostages, they know future ransom payments for other hostages will cease.</p>
