So one of the characters says "Check the news and find out what the hell's going on!" and we're shown them flicking thru channels of empty news desks and a test card to establish OMG! there's no news, no one knows whats happening! Confusion!
Then at least twice afterwards they turn on the TV and have access to a magic channel that shows the movie of what's happening right outside their apartment! Hah, lame.
I suppose the way the film tried to build suspense(and tried to eke out the VFX budget) was to have them hiding in the apartment for most of the film peeking thru the blinds, just cutting to the outside may have interrupted the claustrophobia, but the magic TV channel was a really dumb cop out.
And don't anyone try and say it was the emergency broadcast, that would giving people information about what to do, "stay indoors, conserve water, wait for the all clear" etc. so no.

The dumbest bit for me was David Zayas looking at a nuclear explosion through a telescope - it would have burnt straight through the back of his skull.

The aliens forgot to pack their infrared equipment. Always happens, doesn't it? You have to travel a few million miles and figure out you left something at home only when you get to the planet you're trying to conquer.
Guess what! I've got a fever, and the only prescription is MORE COWBELL!

I think the 'magic channel' was the digital linkup to the telescope? Remember at the party when they're using the telescope to spy on the neighbours and they put up the guy getting the blowy on the TV.
I think what's more stupider is that these super advanced aliens can be outsmarted by window blinds and kitchen cabinets. Seriously? They're looking for people by sight? They don't have infrared to find people?
