I just saw this movie on DVD and was wondering why it didn't make money. It's pretty good. Then I realized that the title, "Machine Gun Preacher," would appeal to right-wing gun nuts, but the movie isn't an action movieit's about helping people in a foreign country and also about the evolution of a character. The target audience for such things is generally the "liberal" crowd and particularly those who have lived overseasthese people are likely to be turned off by a title like "Machine Gun Preacher, " assuming it's a stupid action movie or right-wing propaganda. Whoever came up with the title and marketing campaign for this movie was seriously confused.

Yeah, when I heard the title I thought along the lines of Hobo With A Shotgun kinda movie but was pleasantly surprised.

I consider myself a liberal. I really fail to see how a movie about a self-righteous redneck criminal 'finding redemption with God', going to Africa with his trusty gun to take matters in his own hands, and offend real charity workers who try to make a difference everyday has anything to do with liberal ideas.
But I do agree that the title is rather misleading. I also expected this movie to be some cheesy, over-the-top action flick.

Agree, they should have used the title of the book 'another man's war'.

I don't think it had much to do with political agendas, but more or less the fact that it sounds like a corny title for some crappy b-film.
Sort of like "Nude Nuns with Guns", the title makes people roll their eyes, and skip it entirely. Unless those people are into those type of "Grindhouse" nonsense type of movies, that is
