Finding a shoe isn't the smoking gun you seem to think it is.
Besides, even if he did realize that it was Callie's shoe, where is he supposed to go with his investigation?
And it doesn't matter if she was going to trade herself or not, she should have brought a damn weapon.
Why should she have brought a weapon? Because kitchen knives are a well known weakness of trolls? Let's say she did bring a weapon, what do you think she could have done with it? How is she supposed to fight something that can literally pass through walls?

They made it pretty clear throughout the whole movie that people purposely ignore the truth when there are simpler explanations.
What would checking the tunnel do? The thing literally hides in the walls, only coming out when it chooses to. His character is a detective who was trained to think rationally. Rational thought does not generally include the idea of trolls living in the walls and taking people.
And who goes into the tunnel alone at night after all that's been going and doesn't bring a single thing to protect herself? Not even a knife?! Nothing! She deserved to be caught.
You think a knife is going to help against a creature who can HIDE IN THE WALLLS? She was trying to trade her life for her sister. She wasn't planning a deception or an attack, because neither were likely to work.
I don't even like females, but the girl who played Callie had a nice butt!

Pacing was awful like you said. The potential was there and the story was engaging but it never ended up going anywhere! So frustrating. This could have been really good.
