I think he could've played his game way smarter. He definitely did not need to do all those extreme actions. Especially walking near a car about to explode.

While these actions do enable the audience to assume they know the role he is playing, he is doing all the things to sell his role to the other characters in the film. I don't really think this is that complicated.

Absolutely nailed it. This is my major issue too There were far too many scenes (such as those you mentioned) which, given we now n know who Mark Ruffallo's character really is, don't actually make sense, but were included to throw us off the scent.
I'm sure the filmmakers might argue this was part of their own misdirection to us the viewer, but I'm not convinced that was their actual intention.
