I love this guy but I wonder if he was a little too good for what the producers want. They want drama and people struggling and crying and shouting. Matt did not do any of that, he was always relaxed and had a positive attitude. His shelters were so good that they had great nights sleeps even without fire. I personally could watch this man work all day but can see in reality tv world why they would let him go.

perhaps this would get old quick to alot of people as there would be little drama as he is so good at it.
Yes, I think that's pretty much it. It would just be Matt living as Matt does, and sort of a documentary along the lines of Frontier House or Pioneer Quest. But it probably wouldn't even be as exciting as those two, because as you have mentioned, he already knows what he's doing. These other shows (which were really mini-series) worked because you had a good format in place. You were taking people that were almost completely unfamiliar with living in such a manner, and thrusting them into a situation in which they had to learn together and cooperate with each other, presenting many challenges along the way.
A show of this variety with Matt would teach solid survival skills, but I don't think that it would draw enough of an audience?

I really think Matt needs his own show.. some type of long term/primitive means survival thing.. perhaps this would get old quick to alot of people as there would be little drama as he is so good at it.

I'm new to the series but just learned here it's been on since 2010. The only hosts I know are Matt and Joe. Immediately I noticed a strong contrast between the men. Matt has never been scared or angry and in fact exudes a calm exterior at all times. He can't be perturbed. I believe it's his mental state acquired thru decades of learning and growing as a survivalist. He's the real deal, not like those fake people on N&A. Joe on the other hand is Matts polar opposite. One gets the impression Joe and his wife - if he has one - are into fairly constant fights as Joe strives to constantly assert his masculinity one imagines he feels is quite threatened. He seems jumpy, much less certain of himself and his skills. I have noticed an almost ingrained knowledge of weapons as he made his own cross bow one episode and seems real comfy with guns. Matt is just so comfortable with himself and his body - he's likely the least clothed man in a series today - that I'd be surprised if he doesn't get lots of proposals from women and men. You could do a lot worse and chances are you have.

As for the 72 hour emphasis in the past season, it's a budgetary issue. In the early episodes, Cody and Dave covered a lot of ground, the situations were clearly more expensive and extensive to film and they showed more in less time. Clearly downgrading the cast (I mean Bill and Grady) meant cutting the budget drastically. They were filming in a smaller area, faster and with cheaper on air talent.
Can you elaborate on this?
I was under the impression that a show gets more expensive as it goes on since the cast and crew's salaries increase. With this show having so much turnover in the cast there should be more money available to at least allow for additional filming time since I can't imagine Grady and Bill commanding the salary that Dave, Cody, Joe and Matt would be paid by being on the show.
If this was just cutbacks to keep the show on the air it makes sense but I don't remember hearing anything about poor ratings. It seemed like the opposite was going and the show grew in popularity after Matt was brought on although Joe become even more hated.
Maybe I just don't understand filming but if money is an issue wouldn't it make more sense to stay put?
By "stay put" I mean stopping all this run run run and alter the format of the show to more stay put and wait for rescue scenarios. Not all the time but enough to lower the costs of the show. I just don't see much difference in the staged "finding rescue" by stumbling across a sheepherder or farmer Vs. signaling a boat, passing helicopter or a park ranger finding them. It's all staged anyway, why not eliminate the extra shooting time?

I think the other thing that Dave and Cody brought was the feeling that the average person could get out of a situation with a bit of knowledge without having to be physically fit.
They had to use their brains and think things through more rather than just use physical abilities a lot of people don't have.

I think his style was the antithesis of the format the producers want. The producers seem dead set on this "72 hour" schtick even though it seems to have completely watered down the show. Matt is the type of guy that would be perfectly fine if it took weeks to find rescue because he is confident that he can make it on his own. Sometimes slowing down is the best course of action especially if you have food and water.
He doesn't believe that you instantly die when the clock hits the 72 hour mark which is what the producers and the new cast want the audience to believe.
I personally could watch this man work all day but can see in reality tv world why they would let him go.
I can't. The show got worse not better. I didn't think it was possible but the producers managed to make the show worse by getting rid of Joe.
