Never really liked Richard Wagner…too bombastic.
He's responsible for everyone seeing Valkyries as fat women with light blonde hair tails.
They're not!
And in real life he was a bastard.
But his
"Götterdammerung"
(Dawn of the Gods) is fantastic.
so i am learning something this morning.
his "Götterdammerung" (Dawn of the Gods)
when studying modern political philosophy, we did an entire semester on Nietzsche. Among the works we read was his "Gotzendammerung", translated by the most able Walter Kaufman as Twilight of the Idols; plus I ahve seen Wagner's work as "Twilight of the Gods."
Nietzsche had washed his hands and life of all things Wagner, so his title is a nice little pun/parody of his former Master's great work. But "twilight" makes sense since it strongly implies finality, end, exhaustion: Nietzsche was most definitely thinking the destruction of existing social orders and the laying of the groundwork for a future evolution.
"dawn" strongly implies birth, rebirth, renewal. so did these american and english philosphers so well-schooled in all things German get the translations of Nietzsche wrong? and also Wagner?
taken a few minutes ago. maybe i should read this again.
Good idea.
Read it again.
Next time without
'analyzing'
upfront and without making assumptions out of your own life.
"Dawn of the Gods"
is Ragnarök.

Brilliant composer and polemicist. He was Nietzsche's mentor.
Richard Wagner was a brilliant manipulator.
I really don't like him, for several reasons.
