Spoilers might ahead. In-universe: the TV show Return to Roanoke was actually aired on television?! I mean it was basically a snuff film, many-many people died during filming beginning with the crew member in Chapter 6, ending with Audrey (or Taissa Farmig's Sophie, matter of POV). Yet the channel aired it? Isn't it against many rules, both written and moral? But it seemed like that it did air, during eps 6-9 there was a Return to Roanoke title sequence. I think the finale said it aired. I mean, isn't this forbidden?
(I hope this is understandable, English isn't my native language. Sorry if a thread like this had been already made.)

The fact it aired represents society's (America's) obsession with violence and it's desensitization to it. The channel showed something it shouldn't for ratings and people ate it up.
Don't know if you live in America or not, but news channels will exploit the crap out of gun shootings and other violent situations.
