Both Shelby and Lee have semi-legitimate reasons for returning to that house, but Matt never gave one. He seems guilty, like he's resigned to his fate.
I doubt he's that suicidal over Shelby, but he's obviously not planning to make it out alive.

I don't think he did it. I still think Lee did it. He might have helped Lee cover it up, though.
I think he agreed to return to the house because of the witch. Maybe she still has some kind of hold on him.
