Another good point about words; I think it's the one that baffles me the most. I understand that words are how we communicate and what they convey can be powerful, but deciding that a string of sounds inside a single word, regardless of context, is so frightful it must not be uttered, makes as much sense to me as deciding a color is "bad."
I imagine this is just a condition of humans, to place boundaries, even when seemingly absurd, and if it wasn't these issues it would be others. We could find things like feet and a woman's hair taboo, so perhaps I'll take taboos against curse words and a little nudity, after all.
Seriously, though, I, too, don't know how to move beyond it. Maybe it comes down to a little bit of desensitization; that once we realize the world isn't coming to an end because of the prevalence of things many find taboo (gay marriage is a great example), then maybe we can get our priorities straight. The danger always remains, though, of swinging too far the other way and becoming too lax about a former taboo, which kind of brings me full circle back to the original point about that occurring with gore/violence. Ack, it's enough to make one's head spin!

It's weird how cultures/society develop. The "sex is much worse than violence" in movie ratings is just one of those curious parts of our culture. It's also kind of weird that the F-bomb is deemed more offensive than most of the violence in PG-13 movies. It kinda like an ancient civilization where certain words are taboo. Not sure how you get a society to advance beyond it.
I got nothing.

"it's good to see we are keeping the nudity problem in check."
And essentially
any
displays of sexuality, of course. It's like, "it's okay to blow someone's brains outeven over something as often easily replaceable as one's property, designating the property as more important than human life (but I digress); just don't you dare take any kind of control over your own body and sexuality!" It's the predominant view of American society and it obviously speaks volumes about where our priorities lie. But it's easiest to maintain control/power over people when you place heavy limitations on something as incredibly natural and compulsive as our sexuality.
Not to mention just how much the bombardment of violence desensitizes us to it, and I don't know about anyone else, but I'd much rather be desensitized toward sexuality and be surrounded by a little more wanton sex than this wanton violence. Gee, logically, which one does the most damage and causes society the most harm?

I'm 70 and found the scene with that idiot dragging the top half of the deputy over the sand and trying to put her intestines back disturbing. I would not let a young child watch this movie.

This is a recurring theme. Tons of violence = PG-13, Nudity = R. In a society where shootings go up every year, it's good to see we are keeping the nudity problem in check.
Wow, what a telling statement about where our society is at. You don't mind a young child seeing gore, but nudity bothers you? There is just something SO WRONG with that statementgood luck with your kid!

Sand Sharks contains some gore, lots of bikinis but no nudity. Unless you count the sharks which don't wear anything.
