they run through the gardens, jump over the fence and then climb over the wall. There is a dude sitting in a car pulling a shotgun and Jake shoots him. Couldn't they have pulled this guy out and taken the car to get the hell out of there?
The guy sitting in the car is probably not sitting there without the keys, so either they were in the ignition or in his pocket or whatever. They could've been in the car and out of there in under 30 seconds.
With an extra shotgun.

No doubt! It's unfortunate people don't understand, but it seems to look more and more like that.
Life is tough, but it's tougher when you're stupid.

They didn't have radios, which, I would say, adds to the argument of taking the car. Backup was on its way, but they could not update dispatch about them having exited the building and starting to run off in a random direction.
Jake had his ROVER shot while in his hand from the first burst of AK fire, I'm unsure why Officer Zavala didn't have a radio on him? They then find cover in an hysterical mother's home and had to use her landline (where are their mobile phones?) to call 911 to get in contact with Dispatch. The mother didn't speak English and they didn't know the address of where they were even though that's their patrol area making it even more of a clusterf.ck!
Indeed they didn't know there were more people with guns trying to shoot them. Until Jake jumps over the wall and finds a guy in a car shoving a shotgun in his face. I guess that moment makes it clear that there are guys with AK's in the apartment building, as well as random dudes on the street.
Obviously after the call from the Mexican drug cartel green lighting them the original 3 Latino gangbangers recruited more people for this hit. The guy with the Shottie over the wall looked like he was waiting as a getaway driver. After seeing it again if the were to commandeer a car it should have been the ute (pick up truck) with another guy on the back with an AK who hits Jake. They were saying "Where the f.ck is back up?" even just one patrol car after all those shots fired from the courtyard.
They would not be running away to never come back. They would retreat, regroup with the backup coming their way, and attack in full force. Instead of running with the two of you in a dark alley in an unknown area, low on ammo and a bunch of angry people with big guns shooting at you.
That sounds like exactly like MILITARY tactics, after investigations and reports in mass shootings findings have come out and have been implemented in many Police Departments across the US that First Responders Police Officers are being trained to enter the "Hot Zone" and engage the perpetrator rather than waiting 15 minutes or longer for SWAT by which time the shooter is either killed everyone, taken hostages, got away or killed himself!
As you can see at the final shoot out at the end of this movie one of the Patrol guys is firing a M1A1 rifle.
If you are not willing to give up everything, you have already lost

Hindsight is 20/20, Jake's character (Brian Taylor) had his radio shot while it was in his hand running through the courtyard. For another reason Officer Zavala didn't have a radio and had to use the young mother's hardline phone to call dispatch to tell them they were pinned down by AK-47 fire and request back up.
Once they shot their way out of the apartment and were running through people yards and over walls they didn't know there were even more gangbangers gunning for them.
I really doubt that they teach you in the Academy that when you are out gunned and kill a perp you then take their car and flee the area. Police normally run TO gunfire and request back up not run AWAY from it. That's what makes them different to the majority of people!
