If your pet is as important to you as your significant other, then I hope your s.o. feels the exact same way about his pet and you. And it's probably best that the two of you never have human children.

To me, taking in a pet is commitment to take care of that animal for the life of that animal. Not only as only long as it's convenient. And I couldn't respect anyone who'd put off that commitment so easily.
Also, my thing is this, love me, love my pet. My relationship with my pet predates that person. So what kind of person is willing to just drop that relationship for another.
If someone I was dating didn't like my pet and/or couldn't respect my love of my pet, that relationship would never progress to an engagement stage.

That woman had issues. I would not have given up my dog for her. She demanded her fiance jump over the moon to try to get along with her cat, but she refused to warm up to his dog. I hope this guy dumps her.

I can understand where she is coming from.
I've decided I'll never get really serious with someone who doesn't like animals. I dated someone who didn't really care for my cats and I'm happy it was a short lived relationship.
If I make it a personal rule up front to only date an animal lover, then I should prevent this situation from happening.
