A lot of people have found it troubling that RDJ was not revealed as the face of Doctor Doom in FF: First Steps. But the big twist to come may very well be that RDJ is NOT going to be playing Doctor Doom, it's all misdirection. But Doom will actually be revealed to be Reed Richards himself, played by Pedro Pascal. In the newer Ultimates comics, RR is Doctor Doom, so there's certainly a precedent for it.
If this happens, I think it's a jumping the shark moment, after Marvel made such a big deal about it. The only way to save the MCU at that point would be to have RDJ show up in the return of Iron Man, to battle Doom.
