Every scene had someone tasting 4 or 5 good wines just as a practice session. At his hotel room at the Exam conference, Ian had something like a dozen bottles. This must have been around $500-$1000.00 in that scene alone.
Given that a GOOD bottle of wine can be from 30-80- 100.00 a pop, and these guys spend every day tasting and judging wines, HOW MUCH do they spend a moth on wine alone?
So they have sponsors or is tho simply a rich man's game?

Most of them work in restaurants or wine shops and can often get the bottle for wholesale + 20%

I have a feeling that many times, their employer (since most, if not all, of them are likely practicing sommeliers in high end restaurants) covers at least a portion of the cost and views it as an investment. Even if they move on after passing the M.S., as I believe all 4 of the featured candidates did, the restaurant can still carry the notoriety of having nurtured their education and career.
It also didn't seem like any of them were living too "high on the hog"; likely, most of their paychecks during this time period are going to wine, materials, and exam costs.
