From just reading the plot summary and a few quick reviews, I thought the kids would discover that the old man was an alien of some sorts and have the tables turned on them (obviously I went into this movie genre blind).
As I was watching the film, I thought maybe the old man all ready had surveillance cameras installed inside his home, making him aware of the kids attempted project from the very start.
