At first I thought she was his older sister. Maybe I was just used to her character in House, but she seemed a little young to have a son about to go to college.

I didn't buy her as the mom. I really thought she was his older working sister, as you did, until it was mentioned that she was the mom. They should have done better casting. Either make the mom look older, or the son look younger.
