He didn't actually say 'when we researched, we found that men were being raped' but that's hat he implied by saying the reason that rape scene is in the film is because they wanted to show how dark the times were.
So, I'm assuming that what he meant by that was, yes, that did happen.
I haven't personally done the research into this myself, and I'm not going to. But I appreciate the fact that he said he did do the research and I trust that what's being portrayed in this film is true.
I don't actually understand why there is so much emphasis on this scene, I've seen far worse scenes in other films! And like I said, the scene is in the film purposely to show how dark the dark ages actually were and personally I think that's a good thing!

Assuming is not evidence.
I never denied the nordic homosexuality and that men had been raped in the past and nowadays.
The question stays unanswered:
Were the Vikings famous for raping old monks?
Alas, the question is still unanswered but have to admit that I didn't read any further in the meantime.
