The sheriff blatantly
destroys evidence by ripping out pages incriminating the slow minded brother of the woman he sleeps with from the missing girls diary and no mention of it is ever made. Mom never reopened the diary? Never asked if the sheriff was investigating the man (who had been painting their home and did indeed have a sexual relationship with the girl).
Another mystery.

I could be wrongbut IIRC the sheriff said he'd made a copy of the diary, and I think the pages he tore out were from the copy, not the original. (The pages he tore out were in B&W, the original pages were in color.)
