It's funny you mention Slaughterhouse-Five. Yes..I thought about that film a bit after watching this. Unfortunately, Arrival was a vastly inferior movie to Slaughterhouse-Five.
This is a film that could have been good. It had a great cast and all of the technical aspects were very good. It somehow failed in the telling, and I just didn't quite buy how they reached the conclusion. It just didn't work, IMO.
On the other hand, Amy Adams was just superb. I can see why the critics are all saying this could wind up being her Oscar movie.

Movie that only pretentious pseudo intellectuals and hipsters would like. This movie is super slow paced with a "twist/payoff" at the end that Stevie Wonder could see coming from a mile away. How time could be non-linear while preserving causality was never explained at all. In fact, causality was violated by the main character getting a phone number in the future she need in the past as well as what to say to convince China's military leader to back off attacking the aliens. This movie heavily favors feelings/emotions over logic and reason with the main character moping around in the dark/sitting outside having "flashforwards" of her daughter's life most of the film rather than working. On top of this the actions of the main characters and military aren't believable in any way (e.g. why not have some engineers and biologists on your team). Save yourself two hours of your life and don't watch this. The Rotten Tomatoes score this movie got has proved to me that rotten tomatoes is paid advertising. I would personally give this film 1 out of 5 stars since Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner did good work playing their characters, paper-thin and unbelievable as they were. Other than that there is absolutely nothing of substance here. This isn't a "thinking man's" sci fi movie as it has been described. It is another example of Hollywood stressing the importance of emotion/art over science, logic and reason.

I do not understand how anybody can give this movie a rating of 8.3 and call it a masterpiece. The only thing the cast has mastered is the art of BOREDOM!!!! After watching the movie for 30 minutes you are nothing more than deeply confused and eagerly awaiting some sort of action different than THAT HIDEOUS SOUND! I SWEAR if I didn't know it was aliens in that giant semi- gravity stone tube, I would have thought I am listening to some sort of whales hunt.
Half an hour later you sit in front of the screen even more dazed and disoriented than before. The only new twist is the womb-like feeling Amy Adams finds herself in, her bouncing hair and that creepy white mist which seems to transport people and dissolve matter at the same time.
By the end of the movie you begin to question every choice you have made in your life, including why you decided it was a good idea to see a movie where a semi-linguist, semi-fortune teller and a semi-scientist try to decipher a mysterious alien language, because 3,000 years later the alien whales will need some human help. Eh? Not only did I lose 2 hours of my life, but I need time to recover from this epic disaster.

Ignorant pup. Check my movie ratings and watch list for a high quality judgement on movies, quite a few which are idolised by critics get a poor rating from me, and also vice-versa. I don't pretend to be the be-all-and-end-all of movie criticism, some of my judgements may well be dumb, but, in general, I can tell when something smells bad.

"Critics tend to be arty-farty types who prefer mysterious confusing plots that don't actually make any sense - like the dude on drugs who mutters basic statements now and again and weak minds assume they are a genius." That's quite an assertion you're making there. I suppose you think you're a "great mind" then? Ok.
"No wonder people are getting fed up with all the crappy politically correct irrationality in the world and voting against it." Ok, the moment somebody pulls that utterly ridiculous "political correctness" card I'm done reading. Your perception is all shot to hell.

Honestly, I think that is why I found the movie so disappointing. It was built up as being possibly the best "intellectual Sci-Fi" film since 2001: A Space Odyssey. Well..nowhere near. Going in with that set of expectations, I was sadly disappointed. On the other hand, if I had just gone in with no other expectation than it would be an "adult Sci-Fi" (as opposed to "popcorn Sci-Fi") I think my reaction wouldn't have been as harsh.
And, yes, I will give it that.it was a step above so much of the silly junk that gets passed off as Sci-Fi these days (just a lot of effects, with little to no plot or meaning.)

I agree. It had issues but there was still a lot to admire about it. Maybe the OP was irritated that some are heaping huge praise on it and there is the obvious hyperbole to get the ball rolling on campaigning for the awards season. Sometimes that gets irritating. But it's not nearly as insulting or "dumbed-down" as the YA approach you find in other movies.
