Is there a hidden reason why the spaceships change from vertically to horizontally at the end of the movie? Were they preparing to receive the missiles in case Louise failed to convince the chinese guy?
I mean, when the spaceships leave they turn to vertically again and then fade away.

Well, from the writers perspective you're probably right, just to make us think something was going to happen. In the context of the movie though, I saw it as them taking up defensive positions, then when the threat was over they went back to their standard neutral position.

My theories:

Like the bomb, it was just a way to make the audience feel that something bad is going to happen after that scene, thrill and spice up the moment.

It was an unknown manoeuvre needed for the mechanism that would teleport the ships to be enabled.

It just wanted to show us that even the mere movement of something unknown is enough to inflict fear and thrill the human mind.

You can form some theories, based on their identical shapes.
