This is happening more and more. China playing central roles in movies. The lastest Independence day had Chinese characters all over it, as well as Chinese language thrown in! They know China is where movies that used to tank now make back their budget and appeasing them is built into the storyline.

The original story doesn't really deal much with the international issues in the movie, let alone China.

Not in the short story. IMO China was just added to be an easy way to grow a military conflict for screen dramatic purposes.

I'd never considered that. English being dumbed down so it can be easily understood by intermediate-level English speakers in China.

No, China was not mentioned in the short story "Story of Your Life."
I see your point, except China was made out to be the enemy of mankind in this film. I'm not so sure that will be a big selling point for the Chinese market.
