Get both a card and regular passport. Card is not taken everywhere, only US, Canada, Mexico and Bermuda. Can’t use it for international travel.

Can’t you hire a sitter? We have one who comes 3 times a day to walk and feed our dogs. If it’s a longer trip, she stays over.

A real ID? Yes. And a passport (I never use it though )

Where I live, you make an appointment with the MVC, then bring your documents, check in, and fill out the form while there.

They were supposed to send me the form. They didn't do it and I didn't care enough to make the minimal amount of effort to start on my own.

You can’t just ask for one. You have to provide certain documentation and complete a form, and make sure there aren’t any errors or crossouts because you’ll have to redo the form.

Well hopefully there isn't an emergency situation that'll require you to flee from the US to another territory. I'm thinking war or natural disaster. Just saying.
