The result is Fast and Furious in space which no one liked. Destroying the Enterprise in the first 10 minutes of the movie was not a very good idea. I sure hope JJ comes back and directs the 4th movie. Otherwise this franchise is doomed.

The first thing I heard was that they made Sulu gay. It might have been a turnoff for a lot of movie goers. I thought it was pointless and served absolutely no purpose in the movie, but thats just my opinion. Although the shaky cam was limited, the overuse of the rotating and spinning camera shots got old in the first 15 minutes. I think sci fi movies should be shot on steady cam and only use shaky cam for the battle scenes like in the TNG movies. JJ and crew are definitely under a lot of pressure now to make Star Trek 4 successful.

Yeah I know but I been on the Beyond boards for awhile now and I remember when Orci got the boot there was serious panic lol. And I never loved Orci but it sounded like the production at least would go fine. And then when the reports of dumping his script and hiring Pegg to write it and they kept pushing the film back it just sounded like a disaster in the making. They hired one of the ACTORS to write the script???? Yeah he's a writer but he's never written an action sci fi script so everyone was nervous. And when Lin was hired people wanted to hang themselves. I actually defended Lin as a director because he did so well on the Fast and Furious movies. Dude I HATED those movies. I never even saw FandF 2-4 until the last two years. But watching Lin's made me a fan actually.
But I just thought given everything (and once again that horrible first trailer which sadly what kept SO many Star Trek fans away), I thought it was just going to bomb. At least movie wise I think he did a good job. I know people are really divided and they hate the stuff like the motorcycle and Beastie Boys but sadly thats what these films are, so you either accept it or you don't.
As far as Rogue One, I was shocked when I heard Williams was replaced. I don't even understand why??? What would the reshoots have to do with that? Is there something more to that story?

No I mean before he was even in the running to do Star Wars I just always saw someone from Marvel trying to get him to direct a film because he has that geek vibe and audiences do like him.
As for your second question, honestly it was going to be Rogue One with Garath Edwards. I'm not super excited about the film itself because ONCE again it just feels like another Disney cash grab to redo the original trilogy but I thought the film in itself would be good regardless. The trailers have been good IMO.
I'm not really following it because yeah it does feel like a soulless cash grab but of course thought Edwards would do a great job. But after you and others told me about all the reshoots and rewriting that film yeah not as excited anymore lol. I hope its still good but my expectations has fallen a lot now.
BUT oddly enough that's how I felt about Beyond. I thought this film was going to be horrible and Lin was going to screw it up but mostly because of the time crunch and it ended being the best of the three IMO. And that first horrible trailer. So whose to say but I kept my expectations low for Beyond and ended up really liking it, maybe it will be the same for Rogue One?
I think though if it is a stinker maybe Disney should rethink its approach and not have a damn Star Wars movie every year. They are all going to make a billion dollars regardless but I think if one of them end up really bad it can taint the other films going forward.
Wow that would be interesting. And I know he wrote a Superman screenplay before so he clearly loves the character. Abrams has his hands in so many franchises at this point I'm almost shocked he never been rumored to make a Marvel movie.

No that they revealed the villain use to be human. It sucked all the intrigue out of the villain because we all went in thinking he was going to be some crazy alien.
I thought Lin did a great job IMO and it got 85% on Rotten Tomatoes so I don't think his direction is what caused it to flop. I just think it was A. HORRIBLE marketing campaign as I just gave an example out of (and why did they NEVER tie this movie to the 50th anniversary???) B. The PR itself was bad and people thought the film was in trouble and C. The script in general just wasn't strong enough. I mean OK, but it didn't really make Trek fans excited and D. MAYBE because a lot of fans wasn't too happy with STID and just stayed home (but I think this is a tiny reason not a main one).
So who knows where the films will go next? They might make a fourth one or they might put it on the shelf and come up with something new. But either way DON'T expect Abrams to ever come back. Star Trek fans have gave that guy a beating lol. I think he did his two and done. If he's only going to do one Star Wars film, the franchise closer to his heart and lets be honest here, where he makes REAL money by being a director of those films I dont see him coming back for another fan beating on Star Trek, especially if the film won't make a lot of real money. And frankly I doubt Paramount wants him to direct again because him being the director on STID is what inflated that film's budget to a ridiculous level and he's probably asking WAY too much money now after The Force Awakens.
And I'll be more honest if only ONE guy can make a decent Star Trek film, then the franchise IS doomed lol. No there are tons of directors out there who can do it, Lin is one of them IMO but I get you didn't like him.

Well, I have not seen any of the Fast & Furious movies, but I loved Beyond. I though Abrams did a fantastic job with the first Star Trek, but absolutely hated Into Darkness, totally unnecessary and convoluted. This was a great return to the spirit of Star Trek. The action was perfect, the subplots were believable, the idea of splitting everyone up on the planet was perfect, the music was excellent. The CGI, a few times, just didn't work, but that's certainly not the fault of the writers or director.
I could not have been more pleased with Star Trek Beyond. I'll watch for more from Justin Lin.
BTW, I'm old enough to have seen the very first episode of the original Star Trek series, in 1966.
If we all liked the same movie, there would only be one movie!

You can't have two movies surrounding the enterprise, only to destroy it in the third.
Lest you forget, they spent minutes on end in
The Motion Picture
showing us an obsessive flyby of the refit Enterprise, which was so different from the original that it might as well have been a brand new ship. Then it was destroyed in
The Search for Spock
two movies and five years later, which beats this seven year stint.

I liked it for its action and images, but totally get your disappointment: Instead of carefully tying elements into the story and puzzling them together, the script just throws a new idea at every problem. It felt lazy to destroy it entirely just to have them stranded and then to invent another space ship just to let it take off again and to allow it for some reason be stronger than the enterprise, which was defeated by the swarm within seconds. The power of plot armour was too much and a bit less of deus ex machina would have been nice.
And the "twist" at the end was hardly a great allegory but a pseudo-intellectual attempt to find some vague connection to the beginning, which felt utterly pointless to the degree that it was almost an insult to audience older than 10 years.
On the funny side, they try to cash in too much on the Spock/McCoy constellation. It was brilliant to let them get stranded together, but the movie then keeps them attached to each other and repeats the same like the kids who learned their first joke, telling it over and over again.

I don't blame the director. I blame the script. Once the enterprise crashed it killed the movie for me. You can't have two movies surrounding the enterprise, only to destroy it in the third. And the bring stranded part was terrible. The movie started out so promising. Most disappointing movie to me this year.
