On the page, this is a great story and could be shot for the screen very inexpensively. The movie apparently didn't go that route, as it reportedly has a budget of $20 million, which suggests either a pretty radical departure from the original and some serious mismanagement of the production. It's also the case that without a LOT of padding–again, a big departure from the original story–an adaptation would only be maybe 30 or 40 minutes long.
