Yes there is but it isn't easy to discern. I have read (sadly I can't remember where) that a working title for the book was 'The Thing in the Time of the Sail'.
There is a theory about the relationship between the monster and the men that offers insight into how The Thing is written into the story. Happy to share it but it's potentially a massive spoiler for the show.
Let me know if you'd like to hear it.

The conditions the men must endure in The Terror are absolutely harrowing. It's so painful to read at times (in a good way) that I found myself stopping to try and imagine myself in their situation, thinking "how long would I last?"
Trying to imagine the cold and the fear of dying in isolation. Just awful. Great book!! Nothing like
The Thing.

Not all that similar aside from the icy setting, a cast of all, or almost all men, and a monster.
The hardships the men suffer in the Terror makes what happens in the Thing seem like a cakewalk.
Moderators are terrorists.
