The most obvious choice to me is Joe Haldeman's The Forever War, by far the best military SF novel but it also includes war against an aggressive alien species and time travel and what turns out to be a compelling romance. Starship Troopers is pretty mild compared to it.
Ridley Scott, in his prime, would have been perfect for it.

I know Eragon got a movie adaptation, but it deserves a better adaptation and the other books in the series deserve to be adapted faithfully. I found the books to be okay, but the movie version we ended up with was terrible and that's why the other books were never adapted into movies. The other books in The Chronicles Of Prydain series should get adapted too. Lastly, we have yet to get a good Lovecraft based movie other than the 40 minute black and white silent film.
