In that very last scene of the series the look on Henry's face as he embraces Cromwell is truly terrifying. What I find though, is that I am drawn into Rylance's Cromwell to the point of empathy (projecting myself into his shoes and wondering how best to play Cromwell's cards i.e. fancying what I would do in such a spot). Yet, his Cromwell is a monster of remorseless guile, a shrewd and vicious rationalizer who can temporize while he embodies Machiavellian machination. This is all done with great subtlety and transparency at the same time. There is little in that court that doesn't repel or terrify, like a meld of Mervyn Peake & Kafka, in this series, but I found myself riveted.

In the last scene, I wondered if Mark Rylance's Cromwell had some foreboding - that he will be go down just like Anne Boleyn who was once prized and loved. They're all victims and pawns of Henry VIII's whims.

Mark Rylance was perfect in this series.
What I liked the most of Wolf Hall is the costumes and makeup work. Stellar work.

I enjoyed his and everyones performance.
I've read some posts that think he was miscast as Cromwell.
What were those people thinking? I guess the real "Crumb" was larger but so what? The real Henry VIII was larger, too.
I like to see different interpretations of these people in this amazing time in history.

The last scene was terrifying. The total lack of any regret, sorrow, even passing chagrin, on Henry's faceCromwell was wise enough to take any man's measure at several pacesand in that last scene, he took it at nearly a football field.

That is quite an art to master. Many actors fail at it.

I too pointed out in another thread how Rylance is doing as much when he is listening as he is when he is speaking. That whole scene where the Boleyn's were yacking away while Cromwell just stood and took it all in is a good example. Ditto for when Henry just went off at him.
I think my percentage of Chimp DNA is higher than others. Cleaver Greene
