just finished the movie and gotta say I enjoyed it, despite some shortcomings. especially the use of practical (and much more creepier) effects was nice.
but I thought this was a gory horror film? the one I saw barely had any blood in it. are there other versions or is this just how it is?

PG-13 yes seriously. There was tons of foul language, just not 'completely' overused say like Old School, Vacation, or Pulp Fiction. But it was there. It's NOT a horror movie for goodness sake! It's a dark Christmas Comedy though I WILL admit it does pull from much older horror movies where the 'deaths' are off screen and up to the imagination yet no one is really 'killed' in this movie. The ONLY person nearly really 'killed' was the mother when she was nearly hung by the freakazoid-ish angel. There's a lot misunderstood about this movie in that you HAVE to OVER THINK the movie for it to NOT make sense! That's HALF the comedy right there! I mean really. Jordan's mouth was stuffed with the gunk, but she cough it back up was completely ok she wasn't dead. All we saw with Beth was the van wiggling back & forth really? That's IT? We saw the SMALLEST little bit of a Der Klown come from that box and later we see a HUGE ONE. Same one? No. So do they grow? It's impossible by looking at the size of the head and the size of the little box it came from! Then not to mention the tug of war with the dark elves on the roof! That wasn't even the ROOF! And what happens to Omi? Nipped to death by nutcrackers??? really?? You've GOT to be kidding me! And the adults taken by the snow-rattler were intense, but as we saw it only grabs a hold by the leg and takes them guessing to the sled. The WORST thing was the uncle being pelted in the leg by the nail gun! There's so many elements to this movie (for me anyway) that brings all the ludicrousness (LUDICROUS SPEED!) to a nice little bow with how the evil character were all supporting each other while trying to gather the family up on Krampus's orders. And the somewhat likable actors in the family no matter how bad Ralphie's mother would love to put red soap in these people's mouths before this movie was over! No language, my radishes. That was my one gripe was the language. Considering the nature of the 'horror' this would have been an awesome dark Christmas family movie without all the language (or most of it anyway.) The movie creeped my kids out, and both of them love it now! And my 8 year old likes watching the haunted house walk through at Universal Orlando. (He was talking about it this morning as a matter of fact for some reason).
And there was a drug reference we saw a bong. "enticing" as Beth called it. The movie had some incredible tense moments that were pretty cool and funny all at the time, in my opinion, but horror in today's society spoiled on slasher movies? No, this was not a horror movie, yet a tribute to many classic horror movies while having a little fun doing it! From the opening, to the odd & good chemistry of the family members, the creatures, and the chaos and dark nature of the film It makes me think more on the line of a Chrismtas Beetlejuice with 'balls' not Gremlins. Because what was going on is what Beetlejuice claimed he wanted to do with the living. But deaths? No, no real deaths in Krampus.

PG-13 are you serious? This was much lower than that. They used no foul language or drugs. The only thing I can think of that would have given it a PG-13 was alcohol. Literally nothing else in the movie was even close to "horror" in any way.

ah okay, I understand. I remembered the trailer as pretty 'gorish' but I obviously was wrong.

It's meant to be a comedy horror Christmas movie like "Gremlins"

There is only one version. They edited some scenes, but, for the most part the film is exactly as they filmed it. It was always intended to be PG13, so the horror was more thematic and narrative driven, not gory.
