Well, it was funny, but what made it funny was the pure zaniness of the action and acting. The story and dialogue was actually pretty serious for the most part, with the exception of 'groovy'. It wasn't until Army of Darkness did they take a turn for pure comedy, turning Ash into a cocky, clumsy beep This approach has been taken even further in AvED, which doesn't really make sense since AoD isn't canon to it.

I think I'm minority here, but I liked the growing of the franchise. AoD is my favorite.

I don't think Army of Darkness was pure comedy.
If you look at the entire movie up until the castle battle it still fairly serious in its atmosphere/tone.
Only really the final Castle siege battle and the S-Mart ending are comedic.

I like Army of Darkness. I think it had the right balance of humor/horror. This show, however, is all humor. It even feels like Bruce is doing a parody of himself. It seems that that it got better during "the cabin" episodes. but than it went back to toilet humor. Sam Raimi's retarded brother masturbating over a photograph was just unwatchable))) not even funny

That's right. I remember watching EDII in the theatre and the whole crowd laughed at certain scenes that you could take serious as well. It was "over the top" serious, if that makes any sense.
Then came AOD and the sellout. This series takes it one step further, even to the point where it's just labeled an action/comedy/fantasy nowhorror doesn't even come into play anymore. The Evil Dead, banned or rated +21 in so many countries is still somersaulting in its grave over that.
Did they learn from the dud AOD was at the box office ? Nope, they insist on going further down that path and in doing so deserve the ratings they are getting.
