My husband and I just finished enjoying Deutschland 83 and would love to find other gems. We have also seen Lillyhammer, Occupied, and The Heavy Water Wars.
We had no problems with the subtitles and actually found ourselves understanding some of the dialogue by the end. We both had studied German in the past and a lot of it came back to us!
We hope Deutschland 83 continues to l further explore the relations between the two Germanys as the decade rolled along.
I hope the IMDB community can help me with this unusual request. There is a European language that is English's closest relative - the Fresian languages. Although unintelligible to English speakers, these languages are the closest to English.
Can someone help me find a movie shot in one of the Freisian languages? I am curious to hear what it sounds like.

I was coming here to reply to the thread title - but when I read the text of the first post asking for Freisian language shows I can't help specifically with that (never herd of that language).
However I thought I would share what I know about seeking out non English language TV series - All 4 (a free online service and phone app) by the UK TV channel 4 (C4) has a section called 'Walter Presents' that showcases the best foreign language shows it can source from around the globe all with English subtitles. I am not sure if this service is only available in the UK due to rights issues etc., but am sure if so there are work arounds (VPN's etc.). I found this show DEUCHLAND '83 in that WP section and have now started on a French language mafia series set in Corsica.
Here's a link to the WP area hope it helps any who are interested in foreign language shows with English subtitles: http://www.channel4.com/programmes/walter-presents

Vielen Dank!
Like many good quality non English language films and television shows, this one is not available here in the USA.
I did find "Generation War" and enjoyed it.
Frhliche Weihnachten!

My husband and I discovered and enjoyed the WW2 drama "Generation War." It's about five Berlin friends who go to war in 1941, fully expecting to be back by Christmas the same year. What happens to them is truly tragic. It has subtitles, but because German and English are closely related languages, sharing a similar cadence, the spoken dialogue won't be as distracting as dialogue in Spanish or other Latin languages could be.

It's too bad imdb requires us to reply in order to follow threads. sigh For this reason here is my stupid reply that didn't need posting. I just am interested too and if anyone ever responds, I'd like to know about it.
