She is probably one of the biggest dramatic movie stars in Hollywood who can sell arthouse movies by just her name to mainstream audience and you don't know her? Yes, it was. Screenwriters don't include those kinds of events unless necessary to the story. It wasn't local color. Regarding necessity - IMO it's necessary to see at least half a film before commenting upon it. Otherwise one's opinion is worthless.
