I don't think the portrayal of conservatives in the movie is how you think. The portrayal we hear is simply Susan's opinion, when she was in a rebel fase. As we see, the mother was right and she was actually very similar to her. And I doubt she'd describe herself that way.

I recognized Susan's mom as ladies from the town I live in and go to church with. It's not so much a caricature as it is a spot on characterization.
