In Star Trek Into Darkness Sulu was portrayed as gay which had no bearing on the plot and Takei was a little upset by the change of character and said a different/new character should have been gay.

And if they introduced a new character instead of making Sulu gay Takei would have said "Why did they have to introduce a new character that no one cares about to be gay? Couldn't they have made Sulu gay?" There's no pleasing the gays.
