I only caught the ending, but would like to see the whole movie.
Was it Brando's Desiree?

does end very similar to that but Napoleon turns his back and it ends very quickly. You can get this on limited edition
Blu-ray
at a bargain $7.95 from Screen Archives, probably won't last long.
Even a stopped clock gives the right time twice a day.
