"Studying that illegal alien" isn't even a smart explanation. It's lazy. Studying Superman for 3 years would absolutely not negate the fact that Superman is able to travel faster than the speed of light. Lex wouldn't even be able to see let alone predict his moves.
Superman could wedgie the entirety of Metropolis in the time it took Lex to yell "1A". It's a bad movie. Studying him for 3 years was just a lazy explanation written into the movie to write away an obvious plothole.
