Misdiagnosed as bipolar, mostly with paranoid schizophrenia and also with Autism.

Actually, there are varying degrees and types of bipolar. Some people can have swings that last for longer periods of time. You're right, sometimes it can last for months, sometimes weeks, sometimes days.
Just like with depression, we start getting into "if a condition lasts 3 weeks or more" it's recommended to see a doctor.
When it comes to mental health, talk therapy is a great way to go, but often when medication is needed, a psychiatric evaluation is required, and if meds are deemed appropriate, it's the combination of meds AND talk therapy in combination that yield the best result.
Medications don't always have to be taken forever. For some people, depending on the diagnosis, yes, they do. But not always.
This gets discussed, debated, and disbelieved because it's invisible, so people get contentious about its existence. It's easy for all of us here to be "armchair psychologists" trying to tell people what is and isn't real.

And I have a friend who had a friend whose friend was an asshole and this friend's brother had a friend who had a friend who was bipolar. The bipolar friend's friends were livid.

I might be using my condition as an excuse to avoid answering questions. I also might be using my limp as an excuse for not hurrying up.

My take on jokes about stammering is that they’re okay as long as you don’t make them while the person’s trying to get the words out.
As for my leg, when I was a lad I started getting severe pains in my leg and would rub the affected area to lessen the pain. That leg was also noticeably thinner than the other and one night my brother said I was wearing my leg away with all that rubbing. I thought that was funny but my dad gave him a bit of an ear blast.

I was also talking to one of my friends the other day who is the most even tempered guy on earth, and he said he had been diagnosed with bipolar years ago but he ignored it.
I don't believe doctors are always right though. My brother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis years ago. His new doctor says the diagnosis was wrong and my brother had had a stroke.
Going by the present Frontline Doctors of America drama and all that’s gone before it I’m beginning to think we shouldn’t trust any doctor unless they’re confirming what we already know.

But I’m not sure what percentage of bipolar people abuse others as we tend to hear more about those who harm themselves. Stephen Fry speaks about how the manic side of the condition can be wonderfully creative but also annoying to others until it comes crashing down.

Sure it’s better if people can control themselves so they don’t hurt or mess up the lives of other people but mental illness can be a right old cunt at times and often doesn’t play fair with the person who has it. If you have a limp and might bump into people, you're extra careful when you walk in a crowd. If a man verbally abuses his wife because he is "bipolar", then he needs to take extra measures to control his potentially abusive behavior.

But anyway, giving a reason for something isn’t always the same thing as giving an excuse for something. Giving a reason might explain why my walking can be imperfect at times but the person I accidentally bumped into might see that as an excuse.
