They even gave me a toy airplane. I think they had them on hand because they allowed kids to do that regularly.

I seriously doubt that would ever happen now.
The post 9/11 cockpit door mod beefed up the doors significantly.

Yes, different times. When I was little kid, they let me ride in the cockpit once.

The cockpit door mod was a result of 9/11. Prior to that, the doors were locked during flight, but the doors were not nearly as secure as they are now.

The pilots would have complied with their demands, thinking they were saving lives by doing so.
