Return of the Wolves - Curse or a Blessing?
While many large predators decline worldwide, other species in this group experience a resurgence.
The wolves spread rapidly in Europe. This also benefits many people.
Estimated 21,500 wolves live in Europe.

According to researchers, the wolf population in Europe increased by 58% within ten years.
The reintroduction of wolves in Europe is a significant conservation success, writes the team led by
Cecilia Di Bernardi from the University of Agricultural Sciences in Riddarhyttan, Sweden.
Especially successful, given the landscape changes caused by humans and the high population density.
The downside: Wolves (Canis lupus) kill an estimated 56,000 livestock annually in the EU alone, resulting in compensation payments of around EUR 17 million per year, the researchers report in an overview of the consequences of the spread in the journal
PLOS Sustainability and Transformation
.
No fatal Attacks on Humans for a long Time
According to the Norwegian
NINA
study, no fatal attacks by wolves on humans were recorded in Europe between 2002 and 2020. Attacks on humans reported in Italy and Greece were most likely caused by
domestic dogs rather than wolves. But there were rare non-fatal attacks.
For example, attacks can occur when wolves display fearless behaviour for an extended period and consume food provided by humans, such as garbage. From the previous three centuries, fatal attacks were known in Europe - often by wolves with rabies, which is now considered eradicated in Western and Central Europe.
Handmade sign near Hugo's Bar in Brimson, Minnesota, on August 22, 2013.
The risk to humans from wolves is extremely low, but not zero.
"A wolf walking past a house or along a road isn't problematic."
Even a sighting of a wolf from a distance doesn't pose a risk.
"It becomes problematic when wolves are repeatedly sighted at close range and don't show caution, or when they regularly consume food near people or houses."
Since the wolves in the EU kill around 56,000 livestock annually, each wolf kills an average of around three livestock per year. While the total livestock population of 279 million is many times higher, the risk is unevenly distributed. It particularly affects livestock grazing outdoors. Sheep and goats account for about 2/3 of the losses. But cattle, horses, semi-domesticated reindeer, and dogs were also killed by wolves. Damage increases when wolves repopulate new areas, but subsequently decreases with protective measures.
Wolves great Benefits for Humans
The positive effects of wolves on humans are often overlooked. These include a reduction in traffic accidents involving deer and other wild animals, a reduction in wildlife damage to forests, and promotion of ecotourism.
In the US state of Wisconsin, the number of car collisions involving white-tailed deer decreased by an average of 24% in counties where wolves regained a foothold. This corresponds to
"an economic benefit 63 times greater than the costs of documented wolf attacks on livestock,"
the US researchers reported in the journal
PNAS
in 2021. The reduction mostly is due to the changed deer behaviour caused by the presence of wolves —not just a population decline due to wolf attacks.
Wolves in the Veldenstein Forest
Wolves can create a
"landscape of fear"
that alters deer behaviour. Wolves use roads as a travel corridor,
which can change the movement patterns of deer near them and thus reduce the risk of collisions with cars.
Means, wolves can mitigate economic damage caused by deer in a way that human hunters cannot achieve.
Few Accidents involving Wolves
While accidents involving wolves do occur, the number is extremely low.
"In Wisconsin, there are about
20 car accidents involving wolves each year, compared to nearly 20,000 accidents with white-tailed deer."
Another study in the journal
Human Dimensions of Wildlife
estimates that in France, wolves prevent
EUR 2.4 - EUR 7.8 million in damage from traffic accidents annually by decimating deer and wild boar.
These and other potential benefits are insufficiently investigated and calculated in Europe.
The Wolf spreads more effectively than the Lynx
The researchers estimate around 21,500 wolves on the European continent, without Russia, Belarus, and Moldova. The three small states of Monaco, San Marino, and the Vatican are the only countries on the European mainland where wolves weren't yet reintroduced.
Germany is one of the countries with a particularly high growth rate. The first wolf cub was recorded there in 2000, approximately 150 years after the extinction. 209 packs, 46 pairs, and 19 individual wolves were counted in the 2023/2024 monitoring year, according to the Federal Wolf Documentation and Advisory Center.
209 wolf packs, 46 pairs, and 19 individual animals were counted so far in DE.
Reproduction was confirmed in 196 packs, and a total of 781 pups.
"Since the wolves' return in Germany in 2000, there wasn't one situation in which a wolf
14,000-year-old mummified
weren’t Dogs
Two well-preserved ice age puppies found in Northern Siberia
may not be dogs at all, according to new research.
14,000-year-old wolf cub siblings were found in northern Siberia in 2011 and 2015.
Still covered in fur and naturally preserved in ice for thousands of years, the
"Tumat Puppies"
as they are known, contain hints of a last meal in their stomachs, including meat from a woolly rhinoceros and feathers from a small bird called a wagtail.
Previously thought to be early domesticated dogs or tamed wolves living near humans, the animals’ remains were found near woolly mammoth bones that had been burned and cut by humans, suggesting
the canids lived near a site where humans butchered mammoths.
By analyzing genetic data from the gut contents and chemical signatures in the bones, teeth and soft tissue, researchers now think the animals were
2-month-old wolf pups
that show no evidence of
interacting with people, according to findings published Thursday in the journal
Quaternary Research.
Neither of the mummified wolf cubs, believed to be
sisters
, show signs of having been attacked or injured, indicating that they died suddenly when their underground den collapsed and trapped them inside more than 14,000 years ago. The den collapse may have been triggered by a landslide, according to the study.

Catching Wolves? 10 illegal Snare Traps discovered in Forest ☻
A hunter discovered ten illegal snare traps in a forest in the municipality of Goldenstedt.
The local wolf consultant believes, they may have been used to catch wolves.
Wolf consultant Ulrich Heitmann from Vechta saw pictures of the traps. They appeared professional to him, he said in an interview with the NDR. They were installed at the height of a doorknob. Heitmann believes that a hunter [
poacher!
☻] might have an interest in catching wolves or killing them with the traps.
The Goldenstedt/Barnstorf family lives in the area. Police examined the wire traps on site.
Investigators don't believe they were intended for wolves, nor that they were even functional.
Public Prosecutor's Office investigates the Case
The police reported that they informed the responsible hunting leaseholder after the traps were removed. Like the investigators, the leaseholder doesn't believe that the traps were set for wolves. The police now closed the case and referred it to the Oldenburg Public Prosecutor's Office.
Hunting wolves and setting snares are prohibited in Germany.
Some kind advice to all poachers:
Poaching is severely punished everywhere in DE. And don't do that again in the North!
The EU decided to downgrade the protection status of wolves.
Despite this, wolves will

Wolf Attacks decline dramatically - Livestock Protection works
Nobody expected this:
For the first time since the return of wolves, attacks on grazing animals decline – and significantly so.
Does this mean the planned wolf hunt is over?
58 wolf families live in Brandenburg – more than in any other state.
The new figures surprise: 944 sheep and goats were killed by wolves in Brandenburg in 2024
– compared to 1,281 the previous year. A decrease of 26%. This was stated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment in response to an inquiry from the AfD. Previously, the number of wolf attacks had increased every year. Brandenburg is Europe's number one wolf region.
The reason for this encouraging development: More and more livestock farmers rely on wolf fences and livestock guardian dogs, both funded by the state. In 91% of wolf attacks since 2019, the recommended livestock protection was missing. The majority of those affected were hobby livestock farmers.
Professional breeders and migratory shepherds usually protect their animals properly.
Numbers decline - State Secretary pushes Hunting Plans with wrong Numbers
Wolf attacks on cattle calves (-39%) and game in enclosures (-44%) declined even more.
Donkey and horse foals were not attacked at all in 2024 (previous year: 8).
The most wolf attacks occurred in the Spree-Neiße district (51) and the Uckermark region (36).
Not a single one was reported in the urban areas of Potsdam and Brandenburg/Havel.
Nevertheless, Brandenburg's state government is sticking to its wolf hunting plans.
This June, the previously strictly protected animals are to be declared game animals by law.
The
State Hunting Advisory Council
doesn't want to wait for new regulations from the federal government.
State Secretary for the Environment and hunting lobbyist Gregor Beyer (partyless, formerly FDP) pushes the hunting plans forward – with fictitious figures. Beyer publicly spreads fear by claiming there are 5,000 wolves in Germany. In reality, there are only 1,600 animals nationwide, including 58 families, 8 pairs, and 210 pups in the wolf-friendly Brandenburg region.
Livestock Protection is much more important
"The declining number of attacks shows that livestock protection is much more important than hunting wolves,"
says Carsten Preuß (BUND). He calls for
"continued funding for prevention and compensation payments to be made available quickly and unbureaucratically, and for livestock protection advice to be steadily expanded."
A herd of cows recently turned the tables and chased a wolf away.
Cows chase away wolf.
The Dutch daily newspaper
De Gelderlander
reports on the encounter between a herd of cows and a wolf. Driving through the forest in the dark, one hardly notices what one is passing, as Ruben Kleijer (24) proves. Using a thermal imaging camera, he filmed a wolf at close range as it ran past his car into a cow pasture. The encounter with dairy cows occurred, as can be clearly seen in the black-and-white video.
A white head rises above the dark undergrowth. It looks toward the camera.
The warm animal is clearly visible between the cold and therefore dark trees.
It's clearly a wolf, writes
De Gelderlander
.
Lone Wolf backs away from the Cows
The wolf cautiously walks into a meadow until a cow suddenly appears in the frame.
The large animal runs toward the wolf, later followed by a second cow, and the wolf backs away. Kleijer took the pictures while driving through the forest from Nunspeet to Ermelo, according to the report. Nunspeet is a municipality in the Dutch province of Gelderland with around 30,000 inhabitants, located about 50 kilometers north of Kleve.
A lone wolf is usually a young wolf who left his family to seek out a new territory to start a new family.
I would believe it if that survival rate was a bit lower
Good fairy tales get better and more developed over time.
what's it with schizoids and wolves around here?
After 30 days alone in the forest, 50% of the schizoids return cured.
The other half are usually never seen again.
That's a very good recovery rate considering that schizophrenia counts as almost incurable.

After the death of their mother - Wolf Cubs in the Segeberg Forest survived
After the death of a female wolf near Rickling in spring 2025, the fate of her cubs was initially uncertain. It's now clear: The cubs are alive – thanks to their father and siblings.
Cheerful snapshot: The orphaned wolf cubs from the Segeberg Forest are apparently in good spirits.
Wolf Cubs alive after Loss of Mother
Wolf experts hadn't expected this:
Although their mother was run over in the Segeberg Forest, her cubs survived.
Contrary to the prognosis, young wolves of the Segeberg family survived.
Leastwise five pups from the hit-and-run female wolf of the Segeberg family survived. This is shown by photographs of the pups taken on May 17, 2025 according to the State Office for Environment. After the death of the female wolf on Easter Monday, experts had assumed that the offspring would not survive.
Apparently, the family had cared for the pups, the spokesperson said. The young were likely fed chewed food. It's possible that it was a very early litter and the pups already reached the transition phase from milk to solid food.
The only confirmed wolf family in Schleswig-Holstein lives in the Segeberg Forest.
https://www.stern.de/gesellschaft/regional/hamburg-schleswig-holstein/woelfe-in-schleswig-holstein--segeberger-wolfswelpen-nach-verlust-von-muttertier-am-leben-35744948.html
May 21, 2025
I'm also pleased that the little ones survived, but it's strange that the
"wolf experts"
are so surprised.
They should know that siblings (babies from the previous year) continue to care for their
'new'
siblings, regardless of whether the wolf parents are still alive or not.
And where's father wolf? If he wasn't illegally shot, he cares for his offspring, just like the others.
And why is there only one wolf family?!
I suspect wolf protection à la Northerners:
Don't ask, don't tell! What those
'over-civilized'
sissies don't know, they cannot fear.
However, perhaps we should unite Dackel Valerie with her
'true'
family.
https://www.filmboards.com/t/Pets-and-Animals/Famous-Dackel--finally-found-after-529-Days-lost-3568591/
Members of the EU Parliament voted in Strasbourg to lower the wolf's protection status under EU Law.
The change is a prerequisite for easier hunting of wolves.
With the amendment now passed, the wolf will no longer be considered
No DNA testing before shooting a wolf who supposedly showed
'abnormal'
behaviour will lead to death sentences of many innocent wolves. DNA testing often revealed that the alleged
NABU monitors the return of the wolves to Germany since 2005. To reduce fears and concerns among the population and promote greater acceptance of the wolf, NABU declared April 30th the WOLF DAY. Informational events on the topic of wolves are offered nationwide on this day.
Rokäppchen lügt!!! - Little Red Riding Hood lies!!!
Since the turn of the millennium, wolves once again live in the wild in Germany.
*
What was initially celebrated as a sensation has developed into a certain normality in many places. Wolf families now live in the eastern parts of Germany for many years, and wolves also returned to almost all other states. Residents, livestock farmers, and tourists already more or less adjusted to their new neighbours. The path to this coexistence is anything but conflict-free.
NABU monitored the return of wolves from the very beginning and one thing became clear:
The question of whether wolves can return to Germany permanently is not a question of biology or ecology. Rather, it's about whether we humans want to give wolves a permanent chance here and commit to coexistence.
Who still believes that storks bring babies? Nobody!
But the fairy tale of the
"big bad wolf"
and
Little Red Riding Hood
persists. That's why we say:
"Little Red Riding Hood lies!"
and on WOLF DAY, we put the lies to the fairy tales.
https://rlp.nabu.de/tiere-und-pflanzen/saeugetiere/wolf/tag-des-wolfes/index.html
*
I saw a single wolf in northern Germany, near Kiel, in 1995.
Unfortunately, I cannot prove it…yah, I know how
that
sounds.
But my family believes me, because the few huskies in our area (which can easily be mistaken for wolves in the dark) were at home, and the GSDs were with their owners.
There were no possible traces to be found, but it was raining, as usual, not only on the UK islands.
The wolves returned to Germany via Eastern Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989) and the opening of the borders. There were legitimate fears at the time that rabies might return with them too, but this problem was solved with vaccine baits.

Wolves are a Part of Nature
A survey shows that most people don't want wolves to be hunted.
The government should face the facts that wolf hunting is pointless and not wanted by the people.
Wolf.
….
….
67%
of respondents consider
wolves to be a normal part of the animal world
in Germany,
according to a recent representative survey conducted by INSA on behalf of the BILD and published on April 19, 2025,
61%
consider the wolf an
enrichment of biodiversity
. Only 31% want the wolf to be included in hunting law and its protected status to be reduced. NABU Thuringia sees the results of this survey as a clear vote for the wolf in Germany and Thuringia. The responsible politicians and the government have a duty not to jeopardize decades of joint work on wolf protection in Germany for the interests of a vigorously lobbying anti-wolf scene that wants to hunt the wolf.
Silvester Tamás explains:
"Grazing animals play a minor role as food for wolves. These predators feed on over 95% wild animals and natural resources. We can understand if a grazing livestock farmer is shocked when arriving at the pasture in the morning and finds, for example, a sheep killed lying on the field. That's not a pleasant emotional experience. But hunting wolves doesn't help them. What really helps is proper protection of grazing livestock. Wolf attacks could've been avoided in about half of all incidents of wolf attacks in the Free State if effective livestock protection measures had been implemented on the affected pastures. Expenditures for effective livestock protection in Thuringia are already subsidized by up to 100%. This benefits both, grazing animals and wolves equally."
Shepherd with his flock and sheepdogs.
According to NABU Thuringia, the government should face up to the facts that wolf hunting is pointless and not wanted by the people. The Environment Ministry has the power to find pragmatic solutions and could, among other things, establish a
livestock protection center
that would advise and train livestock farmers, assist with any funding and compensation applications, and can also promote the use of technical livestock protection and livestock guardian dogs.
CDU/CSU and SPD [
new coalition/government after election
Many hunters are hesitant about this.
And they also lack experience with shooting, say a shepherd and a hunter.
Wolves, who kill many livestock, will soon be easier to hunt. But there are practical questions.
"I don't know any hunter in Stemwede who would officially shoot a wolf, even if it were legal,"
says shepherd Nils Möller, noting that the pressure from animal rights activists is intense.
That
Many hunters
don't want
to shoot wolves.
They understand the benefits of wolves and know how they live…in families!
And many hunters have dogs that are not so distantly related to wolves.
But true, the
"pressure from animal rights activists is intense"
.
Although I don't know anyone who would threaten a hunter with death. ☻
Well, everywhere are good and bad ones, and neither hunters nor animal rights activists are angels.

EU Countries approve Draft Law to speed up Wolf Culling
In Austria, the wolf is currently permitted to be culled by regulation.
Environmental NGOs consider culling unacceptable, even with a reduced protection status.
The wolf is a protected animal.
The wolf returned to Austria. 80 animals were recorded individually last year, and five packs [
families
].
Although the wolf is protected throughout the EU, hunting is still permitted in this country.
Currently, wolves that come too close to populated areas or are responsible for attacks are authorized for hunting by decree of the respective state government. A practice that conservationists consider illegal.
European law experts also warned of impending infringement proceedings.
